5 Creative Ways to Reinforce Gospel Principles at Home

Teaching your kids the gospel at home is a task to be taken seriously but approached with a spirit of joy and play! You’ll love these five creative ways to reinforce gospel principles at home.

  1. Come, Follow Me, Made Magical

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has provided an incredible program to assist families as they study the gospel at home as individuals and families. Did you know there are tons of ways to take this grown-up study format and make it kid-appropriate? There are coloring pages and lesson-based activities, short videos, songs, and more, just a click away! We think the very best LDS teaching materials for kids are ones that keep things simple and don’t demand the attention of little ones for too long.

Try dipping your toes into a Come, Follow Me lesson during breakfast or lunch on Sunday. Give little hands a simple creative activity (like a coloring page or a sensory bin) and a snack or meal, and choose one or two simple pieces of the scriptures from the lesson to discuss. It shouldn’t take long or be overly deep, but it will take a small amount of preparation on your part.

Find a way to be consistent with your CFM study and your little ones will soon look forward to the time spent together as a family!

  1. Freshened Up Family Home Evening

Family Home Evening is a great time to discuss spiritual matters in context with real life. But it doesn’t have to look like the super-organized FHE of the nineties. It doesn’t have to be Monday and it doesn’t have to be at home. Pick your day, then ask each member of your family a simple developmentally-appropriate question like, “How did you feel the Savior’s love this week?” or “What do you think Heaven looks like?” Enjoy their answers (and maybe record them for cuteness!), and validate their efforts to ponder spiritual matters. The questions will evolve as your kids grow.

FHE is meant to be a time of family connection. Leave your phones in another room and tune into your kids. Find ways to be playful together. Prioritize laughter and conversation, and let the kids lead the conversation. If there’s an opening to incorporate a gospel teaching, take it, but don’t force it. Play games, wrestle, tell jokes and stories, and council as a family.

Another simple way to freshen up FHE might be to go on an outing together! Grab ice cream, visit a park, or go on a neighborhood walk. Kids are especially engaged and connected when they’re moving, so go get those wiggles out and start having some simple conversations!

  1. Simple Habits on the Daily

Perhaps the most impactful thing we can do as we reinforce gospel principles at home is to form daily habits that we maintain with consistency. Model joy in saying nightly prayers, prayers at meals, reading scriptures, and giving glory and gratitude to God for the beauty and blessings in your life.

Don’t overthink it—these habits are meant to be sustainable as we help our kids develop testimonies. If nightly scripture study always feels chaotic or the timing never feels right, try it in the morning or at a meal time. Come up with a system for family prayers so everyone knows when it’s their turn (and hopefully they don’t argue as much!).

  1. Incorporate Gospel Learning into Play

Bring the stories and doctrine of the scriptures to life with playful activities like role playing and fun games. The LDS toys, games, and teaching materials you pack for church can be used for at-home teaching, as well! Simple, tactile games like the Happy Sacrament Tic Tac Toe or a gospel-themed memory game are great options for little ones at virtually any age. While you play, discuss the symbols you are encountering. Tell relevant scripture stories as you go, such as Jesus initiating the first sacrament, Joseph Smith uncovering the gold plates, or the faith of the stripling warriors.

During downtime, instead of turning on an uber-stimulating TV show for kids, show them the many scripture-themed videos to help them become familiar with scripture heroes and historical events. Check out the BYU channel or the Living Scriptures streaming service for some great options.

  1. Easy Learning On the Go

Making a primary song playlist can be a great way to incorporate gospel learning into your days with little ones. Primary favorites like “A Child’s Prayer,” “I Am a Child of God,” and “I Will Be What I Believe” are sweet, familiar songs that your child is likely learning each Sunday. Not only will a backdrop of children’s gospel songs bring the Spirit along with you on your car rides, it will also help your child learn their favorite primary songs!

For those periods where your child has to be patient and wait (like a doctors waiting room, at a restaurant, or in the car), the Happy Sacrament card set is an amazing and tactile tool for gospel learning. It’s the perfect quiet activity for your church bag, but it can be used anywhere! Discover the symbols and covenants of the sacrament and baptism anywhere!
