5 Ways To Celebrate Sunday With Your Family

What if the Sabbath could feel like a holiday? It is, after all, a holy day! Sunday should feel like a day of connection and rest, but it often ends up feeling rushed, busy, and filled with distractions. Here are five ways you can take your Sundays from frazzled to celebratory!

  1. Think ahead for a smoother routine. Every party takes a little planning! You could plan and set out everyone’s outfits, stock the church bag, make sure you have everything you need for your lessons, or get your meals prepped. Approach it the way you’d approach a special family gathering. What kind of house prep or cleaning needs to happen on Saturday? What kind of groceries should we pick up earlier in the week? What other details can you prepare to make Sunday feel like a celebration of the Sabbath, and not just an observation? Involve the kids in prep where it feels natural!

  1. Use things you are excited about! Clothes, supplies, food, church bag, and media should make everyone feel not only uplifted and comfortable, but excited for Sunday! Bring their favorite sacrament games and other quiet activities for church. Stop saving the special dishes for fancy occasions, and bring them out of the cupboard! If they’re too precious for little hands, see if you can find a pretty set at a thrift store that you’ll be less worried about. Likewise, help everyone choose their Sunday best—the clothing they feel comfortable and fabulous in. Think of the special meals, the special markers, that movie you’ve been wanting to watch together, and get an amazing day planned!

  1. Make the most of your church experience. We often think that an ideal church experience is one with no interruptions from children, but we’re living the gospel of families! Brainstorm ways you (and your family members) can have a positive and engaging time at church even with the wiggling, questions, and hall-walking. For example, pray before church, bring favorite gospel books, toys, or coloring books to occupy the kids, or carry a journal to record your own impressions. Attitude is everything!

  1. Treat each Sunday dinner as if it were a celebration—because it is! Make celebration-worthy food to go along with dinner, like garlic rolls, homemade ice cream, or lemonade. Perhaps beloved family recipes would elevate the occasion. Or try cooking a new recipe with the whole family. Use dishes that bring you joy (paper, plastic, glass, or china—your choice!). Set the mood with other celebratory details like candles, background music, conversation starters, or a beautiful tablescape. And remember that the company and connection are the best part of any party.

  1. Establish family-centered Sabbath traditions. You can adapt this to your family however you want! You could include fun activities like a family talent show, board games, cozy movie night, or a neighborhood walk. You could brainstorm service ideas like bringing someone cookies or visiting a neighbor. Or maybe your family would love some spiritual exercises like journaling, scripture study, or uplifting videos. Write down any Sunday activities that would help establish a sense of celebration.

When the day starts to wind down, encourage everyone to recognize and reflect on what a special day it was! Work together to clean up and get organized and ready for the week ahead.
